Hydrant Maintenance

The City of New Bern has one of the best water systems in the state, which plays a significant role in New Bern Fire-Rescue receiving a response rating of 2.  Additional information can found on the North Carolina Response Rating Systems by contacting the Department of Insurance. www.ncdoi.com

Fire personnel perform annual maintenance and flow tests on approximately 1,500+ hydrants located throughout the city. Recently New Bern Fire-Rescue began using the Mobile311 app to record hydrant maintenance information. The app, which is loaded on department iPads, allows us to record maintenance and flow tests more efficiently and even place work orders for hydrant/water system repairs while still in the field making for a more streamlined process.

New Bern Fire-Rescue also maintains a hydrant identification system within the city using Geographic Information System (or GIS) and brass hydrant tags. All hydrants are plotted into our GIS by our Development Services division. The fire department then physically installs the hydrant tags which include the zone and hydrant number assigned by Development Services. This ensures the correct documentation is filed for each hydrant while  maintaining and servicing fire hydrants each year.
