Training Disciplines

FIRE SUPPRESSION - Our primary mission is to save lives and protect property from the ravages of fire. Here members of New Bern Fire-Rescue hone their firefighting skills during a "live burn" with two of our neighboring volunteer departments, No.7 Township Fire-Rescue and Tri-Community VFD.

FIRE BOAT - New Bern has many waterfront homes, as well as many boat docks and marinas. New Bern Fire-Rescue protects these with our 25' Boston Waler Fire Boat.

VEHICLE EXTRICATION - Saving the lives of and rendering medical assistance to victims of a motor vehicle crash is part of our job. Here, members of New Bern Fire-Rescue train with New Bern High Schools Fire Academy using various extrication tools to gain access to the passenger compartment of a car.

CONFINED SPACE- Our Technical Rescue Team (TRT) provides confined space rescue services to our community. Here members of the TRT train on confined space entry and rescue.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES -
New Bern Fire-Rescue provides assistance on medical calls to paramedics from Craven Regional Medical Center and other medical agencies as needed. Most of our personnel have some level of medical certification. Here members remove a patient from a hazard zone for medical treatment and transport during a county-wide disaster drill.

WATER RESCUE- As New Bern is located at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, our Technical Rescue Team (TRT) provides water rescue for our community. Here the TRT practices their skills of water rescue.

PUMP OPERATIONS - All personnel must be prepared to operate fire truck pumps at a moments notice without error. Personnel participate in on-going certification and in-house pumps training. Here Fire Specialists train on water supply and pump operations.

THERMAL IMAGING - New Bern Fire-Rescue is very fortunate to have thermal imaging cameras which allows us to find victims in smoke-filled environments where visibility is non-existent.

AERIAL OPERATIONS - New Bern has several multi-story buildings that cannot be reached by conventional ground ladders, necessitating the use of elevated aerial devices. Here personnel train on New Bern’s 100-foot aerial platform truck.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS - New Bern Fire-Rescue responds to all hazardous material incidents in the City, providing “operations” level services to protect our community from the dangers of chemical releases. Here New Bern Fire-Rescue trains with Craven County Emergency Management’s decontamination tent in a county-wide disaster drill.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY
New Bern Fire-Rescue is a Permanent Checking Station (PCS) for child passenger safety seats. We currently have 15 certified seat technicians. Here a new technician undergoes training on proper installation of a child safety seat.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONING - Heart attack is the leading cause of firefighter death in the line of duty. New Bern Fire-Rescue takes physical conditioning very seriously. Personnel “work out” daily while on shift and undergo annual physical condition evaluations.
