Volunteers Needed for Community Build

Kidsville 3-D renderingVOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Kidsville 2.0 Construction Begins July 15th
Children, families, adults encouraged to participate in this community building project

A community project to construct the new Kidsville 2.0 playground is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 15th and continue through Sunday, July 21st.  Volunteers of all kinds are needed to complete the build and no experience is necessary.  Once the project is complete, New Bern Parks & Recreation plans to officially open the playground and invite everyone to come in and enjoy the City’s newest amenity.  Kidsville 2.0 will be located at Seth West Parrott Park, beside West New Bern Recreation Center, at 1225 Pine Tree Drive, in New Bern.

Volunteers are needed Tuesday through Sunday.  Volunteers can help the entire week, for a day, or a single shift.  Corporate volunteer teams, churches, nonprofit organizations, businesses, families, and children (ages 10 and older) are invited to help, but registration is a must.  Three (3) work shifts are offered daily:

·         1st shift: 8am – 12 noon

·         2nd shift: 12:30pm – 5pm

·         3rd shift: 5:30pm – 9pm

Meals and beverages will be provided for volunteers.  To volunteer, please call New Bern Parks & Recreation at (252)639-2901.

“We are so excited to start construction on Kidsville 2.0.  This playground was designed by children of the community and will follow the style of the original Kidsville,” said Foster Hughes, Director of New Bern Parks and Recreation.  “We really need volunteers to help with this project.  Building this playground is a fantastic way to get involved with the community.  We encourage you to bring your family, friends, and neighbors to help.  This should be a rewarding experience for those who choose to participate.  We look forward to seeing you next week!”

The City is asking volunteers to donate or loan tools for this project.  Some of the tools needed include:  slide compound miter saws, power miter saws, orbital jigsaws, 3/8” cordless drills, 1/4” cordless impact drivers, bubble levels 36 inches or longer, router circular saws, sawhorses,  speed squares, tape measures, work gloves, hammers, safety glasses and more.  New Bern Fire-Rescue has volunteered use of its Urban Search and Rescue equipment, including saws, generators, hammers and more.  Several city firefighters have also agreed to help with the project by signing up for volunteer shifts.

Kidsville was closed in April of 2018 due to safety and maintenance concerns.  The playground was removed in February of this year.  Fundraising for Kidsville 2.0 is ongoing and there is still time to donate or participate in sponsorship opportunities.  Ceramic tiles, brick pavers, and fence pickets are available for purchase.  Naming rights are also available for playground components.
