Yes. We will be looking at various forms of coastal and riverine flooding, drainage and stormwater management, and other potential sources of flood inundation relevant to New Bern and the surrounding area. We will also be looking at the potential for changes to the environment such as changes in sea level, erosion, and shoreline change and how those factors could affect future conditions.
Does my homeowners insurance cover damages from a flood event, such as from a hurricane or river flood?
No. Talk to your insurance agent about flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program and other alternatives. If you live in the Special Flood Hazard Area and carry a mortgage on your home, flood insurance is probably required. But remember, anyone can purchase a flood insurance policy regardless of whether you live in the floodplain or not. Approximately 1/3 of all flood insurance claims actually come from policy holders outside the mapped flood hazard area. Flood insurance is an important consideration for anyone living in the New Bern area.
