Crime Prevention Tips

General Safety Tips

  • Install locks on all outside entrances and inside security doors. They should be double cylinder deadbolts with movable collars that are recessed into the door.
  • Ensure that good visibility is maintained through windows and that all valuables are put away. For businesses, consider removing valuables from window displays during closed hours.
  • Purchase and install alarm systems from a licensed alarm company with a central monitoring station.
  • If you have a safe, it should be fireproof and tamper-resistant. It should be anchored securely inside your home or business. Leave it open when it is empty.
  • Your home or business exterior should be checked routinely including the roof, basement/cellar, and walls.
  • Take measures to make your home look occupied, even when you are not there.
Vehicle Breaking and Entering Tips

  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle when it is unoccupied.
  • Lock your vehicle’s doors when it is unoccupied.
  • Park in a well lit area on your property. Motion detecting lights are a deterrent to someone attempting to break into a vehicle.
  • Install motion detecting surveillance cameras. They could aid in the apprehension of a person committing a crime.
And most of all, be a great neighbor! Be aware of your and your neighbors' surroundings and report suspicious activity to the police department in a timely manner (in a non-emergency, call (252)633-2020. In an emergency, dial 911). When in doubt, call the police. The New Bern Police Department would rather investigate a call and find that there was no criminal activity than respond after a resident has been a victim of a crime.
