Privilege Licenses

The N.C. General Assembly voted to repeal local business privilege-license taxes in 2015.  The  privilege license tax is an excise tax levied on the privilege of conducting a particular trade or business in the City.  Click here to learn more about the State of North Carolina Privilege License Tax.

The City currently levies a Privilege License Tax on businesses within city limits that sell beer and/or wine for consumption on- or off-premises. Click here to view the list of City Fees & Charges.

Currently, these fees are as follows:

Beer, on premises $15
Beer, off premises $5
Unfortified/fortified wine, on premises $15
Unfortified/fortified wine, off premises $10

This license grants business owners permission to operate and conduct business within the City Limits and should be obtained before business operation.   The license is issued after a brief application is filed with the Accounting office.
