Wastewater Pretreatment/FOG Program

Industrial wastewater discharged into the City’s collection system may contain significant quantities of toxic pollutants and other substances. These pollutants may interfere with the wastewater treatment system and industries are required to provide treatment of processed water to remove any such pollutants. The City, in a Pretreatment Program, supervises industries to ensure that industrial discharges are in compliance will permitting requirements. Details of the pretreatment program are outlined in the New Bern Code of Ordinances under Chapter 74; Article IV. SEWER USE.

The Fats, Oils and Greases (FOG) Program is administered by the City to eliminate discharges of grease to the sewer collection systems, which are one of the main causes of sewer overflows.  The program includes annually inspecting restaurants and other cooking facilities, providing them information concerning FOG, and checking discharges to ensure compliance with established FOG limits.  Details of the FOG program are outlined in the New Bern Code of Ordinances under Chapter 74; Article V. FATS, OILS, AND GREASE CONTROL.
